Vitoria is on top of the hill where the settlement of Gasteiz was located. Its wall is proof of the defensive character of this city, for many years a matter of dispute between Castile and Navarre. The Medieval Quarter, declared as Monumental Area, is composed of several streets that have been used as shelter and rest place for past and present pilgrims that have enjoyed its magnificent historic buildings, such as Santa María Cathedral. The city is surrounded by a “Green Ring” of Nature Parks, where we can find two hidden Romanesque jewels of the Alava region: San Prudencio Basilica and Nuestra Señora de Estibaliz Sanctuary, where its “Speciosa” gate invites us to bring back old time memories.

This tour takes us to the interior of Biscay. In a magical area of green and steep mountains, there is a great religious, architectural and cultural heritage. Saint Peter of Tabira Church, Saint Anne Arch and Church ensemble, Lariz Tower, the surprising Town Hall and Saint Mary Church, are waiting for us in the town of Durango. In the town of Gernika, we will visit the Casa de Juntas (Assembly House), the replica of Picasso’s Guernica and the Fueros square where the Peace Museum is located. We will then continue by bus to Bermeo and Mundaka estuary driving along Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Walking through the fishing village of Bermeo we will pass by the Fishermen's Museum and a whaling ship, surrounded by the charm of its traditional houses. After lunch we will head for Bakio, headquarters of TXAKOLIGUNE, the Bizkaiko Txakolina Wine Interpretation Centre. On the way back, we will stop at a viewpoint and enjoy a spectacular view of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Bilbao is a city of contrasts. We propose an attractive tour from historical Bilbao to the most avant-garde areas. Medieval Seven Streets, Santiago Cathedral, Ribera Market and the New Square are the heart of Old Bilbao and from here we will move uptown to discover the modernism and eclecticism of Gran Via, Plaza Moyua, Guggenheim Museum, Euskalduna Palace, Azkuna Center , Calatrava Bridge , the Basilica of Begoña with a final stop at Artxanda Hill viewpoint. And the Estuary, the real star of this story, will guide us in our journey towards Getxo to visit the Vizcaya Hanging Bridge, the manor houses of Neguri , Algorta Old Port, while enjoying the breathtaking seaviews from Aixerrota cliffs.

We head for Saint Jean de Luz, the City of Privateers, where we will visit its prosperous fishing port that grew from whaling and walk around the Louis XIV Square and the magnificent church of Saint John the Baptist, with its wooden galleries and the fabulous Baroque altarpiece. We will drive then along the coastal road to Biarritz, stopping at the lighthouse to admire the panoramic view over the city and the Bay of Biscay. An old Roman road opened the Pilgrim Way to Santiago de Compostela and through the San Adrian Tunnel pilgrims were leaving their traces in a countryside dotted with hermitages and churches which brought to our land the Romanesque style. The land that was through centuries the passway between France and Castile hides a rich heritage composed of medieval villages, castles, prehistoric dolmens and rich colourful frescos waiting to be discovered. The walled town of Salvatierra with its arcaded streets keeps an old quarter with beautiful emblazoned noble houses which were witness of the battles between lineages while the Romanesque portals of Gazeo and Alaitza churches lead us into some spectacular wall paintings.

Located right in San Sebastian harbour, this landmark building dating from 1928 keeps an important maritime and marine heritage. One of the most outstanding vestiges is the skeleton of a Northern Atlantic right whale in addition to a fair amount of water tanks dedicated to the Bay of Biscay and a variety of tropical species, topped with the spectacular 360º tunnel.

This area, less than half an hour by car from Bilbao, may bring to the visitor pleasant surprises and specially a close contact with nature.
